As many well informed individuals know, Zohran Mamdani being recently voted as New York City’s mayor was a win for Democrats nationwide. The victory not only guaranteed Democratic presence in an immensely large and influential city, but also served as a wake up call for what voters are looking for in candidates while clarifying which issues mean the most to young people everywhere. Although this election was in one prominent city, it raises questions about whether these priorities reflect a greater generational shift.
Mamdani’s campaign was built on important policies such as climate action, affordable housing, and increased investment into public services, all issues that resonate strongly with teenagers and young adults. As senior Frida Edmonds commented, “the NYC mayoral election showed the nation just what young people want in their candidates, what policies, what attitudes, and what priorities they need to have in order to gain votes.” While it may not represent all young people, the election highlights how moral values and combatants for issues like social justice are becoming increasingly desired.

While the election took place almost 3000 miles away from San Francisco, its impact still touched down at our very school. This election serves as a powerful reminder that young people, specifically Gen Z, are becoming increasingly powerful in elections by choosing candidates who align with their views and understand their concerns. Even in a city like SF, known for its social engagement and political activism, conversations about government and leadership are being brought up among the younger generation. At SHC, many students are more motivated to engage in these political discussions, especially when it comes to topics and issues that resonate with them. For example, during a lunch discussion with my upperclassman friends, topics of climate change, education, and social justice were highlighted throughout the banter, all of which mirror Mamdani’s political basis.
As we approach future elections, Mayor Mamdani’s election showed young people, including those at SHC, that our voices can make a difference and that political participation is important. This election gave America insight into what our generation is looking for in the individuals we vote into office.
