A Way To SPARK Your Interest

Are you passionate about raising awareness about diseases and how they affect our society? S.P.A.R.K. (Students Promoting Awareness of Research Knowledge) is the new club at SHC that can quench your thirst for more insight on all of these illnesses!

Within SPARK Club, there are forty members, including six officers who lead the whole club.  Of these six members, Melissa Bautista ‘14 is the President, Yoselin Martinez-Xonthe ‘14 is the Vice- President, Rosario Macahilas ‘14 is the Secretary, Nicholas Lee ‘13 is the Treasurer, Shivangee Devdhara ‘14 is the Upper-Classmen Outreach Coordinator, and Urvi Mendez ‘15 is the Lower-Classmen Outreach Coordinator.

“Why were you so interested in starting SPARK Club?”

“ It’s something that I felt really passionate about. I feel that everyone in our SHC community should be more aware of these diseases, and know more about what we can do, as students, to help people diagnosed with such diseases” -Melissa Bautista ‘14

The main purpose of the SPARK club is to promote awareness about what is going on in the world.  Hopefully, the students of the SHC community will learn more about what is going on in the world around them.  This club enlightens students’ understanding of all different types of diseases and how to help the people affected.  This includes Breast Cancer, Diabetes and so many others.  They also hope that these students leave with a better understanding of the world and they are able to help those that are less fortunate than themselves.  Ultimately, they hope to raise the knowledge of the students.

The SPARK club is all-inclusive and makes announcements informing and inviting everyone to their events.  They organize monthly fundraisers and the members of this club meet on every white day in the chapel.  If there are two white days in a week, they meet on the second white day.

Last month, SPARK Club celebrated Breast Cancer month. As a way to support this cause, SPARK Club had a Breast Cancer Walk in Golden Gate Park on October 20, 2012. The Breast Cancer Walk was a great success and SPARK Club earned $460.00 which was donated to the American Cancer Society to contribute to the search for the cure to cancer.

This month, SPARK Club will be bringing awareness to Diabetes. Although another event is still being planned, SPARK Club hopes to create yet another spectacular event for all of us to enjoy! Are you ready to take action with SPARK Club and support those with Diabetes?
