Anonymous Group Begins Cyber-attack on ISIS

The Anonymous group is an organization of “hacktivists” that, according to Adam Carter from CBC News, are known by supporters as “Digital Robin Hoods”. Others have described them as “cyber-terrorists,” because of their several attacks on government, religious, and corporate websites. The group’s uniform is Guy Fawkes Mask which symbolizes the movement’s manifesto for intrinsic change in politics, government and society as a whole. Their purpose is Internet vigilism and activism, as they seek to protect the world through Cyber-Surveillance.

Following the multiple terrorist attacks in France, a faction of Anonymous known as Ghostsec, recorded a video, declaring war on ISIS. Since the video was launched, the group has claimed to have hit two of ISIS’ most important web platforms, the first of which is mnbr.info, a forum for ISIS supporters to converse with other sympathizers without trace. The second website that they targeted, nshr.me, is a cloud-service used by ISIS followers to spread propaganda across social media channels. The group used a common method of cyber attack called DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) to make the websites unavailable for users. The first website was back shortly after it was hacked, but the other took over 13 hours to relaunch. The group also went on to take down several communication websites in their ongoing strike against ISIS and their affiliates.

The Web Activists seek to continue their targeted cyber-attacks. They went on to state on their website, “Our mission is to eliminate the online presence of Islamic extremist groups such as Islamic State (IS), Al-Qaeda, Al-Nusra, Boko Haram and Al-Shabaab in an effort to stymie their recruitment and limit their ability to organize international terrorist efforts”. With these strong words the proxy war in the Middle East continues and the Anonymous group looks to help bring justice in any way possible.
