iPhone 6s: Marvelous or a Mistake?

It always seems like the second you get a new phone or laptop, there’s a brand new model which takes its place. The most recent case of this is the iPhone 6s. Its marketing slogan boldly says, “The only thing that’s changed is everything.” Clearly, there’s no doubting the excitement and anticipation of Apple’s latest product. The newest edition to the Apple family definitely exceeds initial expectations, as it has a variety of new features packaged into a beautiful rose gold hue.

The biggest change, in comparison to the older models, seems to be the 3D touch. By tapping the screen, options appear, allowing a user to take photos and view links without ever leaving their current app. In addition to this, its camera has increased resolution, and includes what’s called a “live photo”, which operates much like a GIF. It basically includes clips of a video before and after a shot is taken, by splicing them with the image.

The new iPhone also boasts a waterproof feature. It began as a rumour, but later made an appearance on the website iFixIt. There, it shows a video (you can watch it here) which displays it as less prone to water damage. In the video, it was explained that the design includes a gasket strip, which lines the lip of the case. Ideally, this would make it more difficult for water to seep through the machine, however, this website warns that the phone doesn’t actually live up to its claim. After showing it submerged in water for two minutes, the liquid still seemed to easily penetrate the essential aspects of the iPhone: the headphone jack, speakers, and volume buttons. Realistically, the only way to achieve Apple’s goal would be via getting rid of these external parts altogether. For those of you who plan on taking artsy underwater pictures, stick with that overpriced waterproof phone case.

Every device has it’s good and bad qualities, so to make sure that prospective buyers are in the know, here is a list of pros and cons of the iPhone 6s.  Let’s see if any of them will make or break any buying decisions.

Pros

  • Do you remember when the iPhone 6 came out and there was a small phenomenon called bendgate?  Under a certain amount of pressure, this model could bend when placed in the pants pockets of the user, therefore creating a “bendgate.”  However, the iPhone 6s is made with harder, thicker aluminum so all who suffered the wrath of the bendgate, those days are over!
  • Then, there are the higher amount of pixels in both the rear and front-facing cameras.  The rear went up from 8 to 12 pixels while the front went from 1.2 to 5 pixels.
  • For those who see the increase in pixels as only a minor upgrade, there are other factors to consider.  The phone will overall run much faster than before.  Apple has the iPhone 6s run on a 64-bit A9 processor.
  • Siri has been upgraded as well.  Now she is always available even without a power source.  You no longer have to hold down the home button to activate her either.  By saying “hey Siri” you have automatic access to ask her your “very important and pressing” questions.

Cons

  • First off, the base model of this phone contains a mere 16 GB of data.  For a plethora of Apple users, that’s not nearly enough storage!  Unfortunately, the only way to get more is to pay an extra charge for either the 64 GB or the 128 GB.
  • If you google the iPhone 6s there are at least three different links regarding to its waterproof quality.  This model proved to be more water resistant than prior models, but Apple has not yet successfully produced a 100% waterproof phone.  So although you shouldn’t dunk your new gadgets in the toilet, the chances of saving your iPhone from water damage in such a scenario are still slim.
  • The third downside to this appliance has been put publicly on the site MacRumors.  It has been reported by many users that their phones have been shutting off unexpectedly, with battery power and contact with the phone not being factors.  So far the only solution is holding the power button down for 10 seconds to restart the phone.
  • Lastly this iPhone costs way more for the buyer than it does to manufacture the product.  The Irish Examiner stated that Apple is selling a $649 device in many countries throughout the world, when it only costs $211 to make.  What a rip off!

Overall the iPhone 6s’ cons seem to be more drastic than the pros, making this model not worth the purchases.  Nevertheless, the phone itself is filled with some fun and creative features that add to the ever increasing sphere of technological advancements in the world today.
