Before the Winter Olympics, the Jamaican bobsled team had a problem. They were unable to pay their Olympics entry fee, were not going to the Winter Olympics in Sochi, and definitely not going to relive that famous movie “Cool Runnings” nor the events that inspired that movie, until the Internet saw the predicament, that is.

Crowdfunding websites went wild, cryptocurrency was traded at slower-than-lightning-but-still-fast speed, Internet forums argued over the minutiae, but all participants agreed on one thing: the Jamaicans needed to make it to Sochi. As they needed money, money was raised. The fans came forth, and the Internet provided for their favorite team. Why was Jamaica the Internet’s favourite team? The movie “Cool Runnings,” which came out in 1993, was about the first Jamaican bobsled team, and their struggles to be admitted to Olympics when they had no snow and no experience. After the money was raised, and the Jamaicans were on their way to Russia, over a hundred and thirty thousand dollars was raised, based largely on the Internet’s nostalgia for “Cool Runnings.”
Even when the team reached Sochi, their troubles did not end; their equipment did not arrive with them. Undaunted, the team borrowed equipment from whoever they could so that they could compete. After a long delay, there equipment arrived and the team competed. Even though they did not win the Olympic Gold, the Jamaican team won the hearts of many new fans and old nostalgics alike.
