The recent uproar of the motorized board has people everywhere in California cruising in the streets on a reimagined version of the classic skateboard.

Surprisingly, driving a motorized skateboard in California on the streets is technically illegal. In 1977, a law was passed that banned gas-powered skateboards of any kind to be driven on public streets. These skateboards were noisy and at the time were built “do-it-yourself” style using a gasoline powered engine, making them a threat to public safety.

Thanks to brilliant engineering from start-up companies like Boosted and ZBoard, the motorized skateboard has evolved into silent, eco-friendly rideables that are reliable enough for commute. To skateboarders’ rejoice, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law that reversed the ban and made the newly designed electrically motorized board’s legal as a use for transport. As long as the skateboard doesn’t speed up to 20 mph, people are free to travel in the bike lane. This law will be in effect on January 1, 2016.
So feel free to skip the DMV licensing process and purchase an electric skateboard for an alternative means of transit.
