Dangerous Energy Drinks

The Report

Recent studies have shown that teens who drink energy drinks are more prone to TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Because of the large number of young athletes nowadays, teens are more likely to consume energy drinks for the thought of excelling in their sports.

Gabriela Ilie, leading author of the investigation on the energy drink hazards, conducted a test measuring the types of drinks kids and young adults consume. After researching and experimenting, she and her team concluded that those who consume sports refreshments are more apt to develop TBI. Because these drinks are packed with caffeine, kids who drink them are more hyperactive and therefore are more prone to accidents.

“During the teen years, the brain is very vulnerable as it is still developing so a hit to the head can do more than just sit one out of the game,” says Gabriella. This can do more than just put one out of sports, as it is also been linked to poor academics, drug abuse, suicide, and aggressive behavior.

The Solution

According to Ilie, she claims that the best solution for reducing TBI from energy drinks is to encourage parents to stop their kids from consuming caffeine-filled beverages. This would “improve” their performance in sports activities as well as academics and other everyday tasks. Some possible non-caffeinated alternatives include brands with less sugar such as Ocean-splash, Motts, and Minute-maid products. In addition to store-bought items, one can also drink homemade mixed juices that contain all the nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables.
