As the holidays approach here in San Francisco, we are all looking forward to some new and exciting family and friend activities. While the city is not exactly known for being budget-friendly, the good news is that there are still plenty of ways to celebrate without destroying your wallet.
1. Visiting the Tree:
Every year, in the heart of downtown San Francisco, a magnificent 83-foot-tall Christmas tree gets decorated and lit for public viewing. There is tons of holiday cheer with the ice skating rink nearby, colorful holiday store displays surrounding it, and Christmas music blasting. This is a great place to come for a magical experience with the people you love. Even Mayor Daniel Lurie would have to agree, as he recently lit the tree!
2. Fairmont’s Two-Story Gingerbread House:
In San Francisco’s Nob Hill, the Fairmont creates an enchanting experience for everyone to enjoy by setting up a 22-foot gingerbread house to walk through. Get this: even the walls are made up of real gingerbread, in case you get hungry–although I wouldn’t advise eating it because I am not completely positive that the icing is not Gorilla Glue.
3. Union Square Winter Walk:
Check out the Winter Walk in Union Square to visit food trucks, small businesses, stages for singing and dancing, and more! The Square is transformed into a winter wonderland, with blue carpeting laid across the streets, fake snow falling, and snowflake projections. This is a great place to come for a bite to eat, as many local food trucks offer tasty items.
4. Starbucks:
As a classic cafe that does Christmas like no other, Starbucks releases its special holiday menu for a limited time only. Ranging from peppermint mochas to polar bear cake pops, there is something for everyone. To save some extra coin, you can download the Starbucks app to start earning points and rewards. This is a cozy spot to do homework, get some reading in, or chat with friends.
5. Botanical Garden:
Looking for a nature paradise? Well, you’re in luck! San Francisco’s Botanical Garden offers free admission to the general public on Christmas and New Year’s Day. The holidays are the perfect time for anyone to reconnect, and what better way to do so than in this natural and relaxing getaway?
These are just a few of the great holiday experiences you can explore on a budget. The real magic of the holidays is not spending money, but spending time with friends and family.
