With the recent election cycle’s end, countless people around the country rallied together during what is arguably one of the most influential elections in American history. In our own backyard, the Advocacy in Action club at SHC worked diligently to prepare students and voters, educating them about the importance of this season both nationally and locally. The Emerald interviewed Katie Worster ‘26, the current president of Advocacy in Action, about the measures they have taken to encourage student participation in political activism. Here’s what she had to say:
What is Advocacy in Action? What does the club do during meetings, and how can people get involved in your work?
Advocacy in Action is a club focused on social, environmental, and political discussion and advocacy. During meetings, activities vary from writing postcards addressed to voters in swing states to learning about and discussing issues that are prevalent in SHC, San Francisco, and worldwide. People can get involved by joining our Schoology group using this code: QP6M-CQ4W-XWCSK and following our Instagram account at @shcadvandact for more opportunities!
What did Advocacy in Action do during the election season to prepare voters?
During the election season, Advocacy in Action hosted a table in the plaza at lunch where SHC students could fill out postcards sent to voters in swing states. We wrote over 150! These postcards were done through the organization Reclaim Our Vote and provided critical motivation and information to those who were registered voters but were unsure about if and how they should vote.
How did local elections come into play during meetings?
During meetings, we incorporated local elections by creating posters about propositions in San Francisco. These posters allowed students to learn about propositions and their pros and cons, preparing students for voting, whether or not they were able to. After the election, we discussed results from both national and local elections.
What opportunities are available for students who want to work in political advocacy?
In addition to joining Advocacy in Action, students should consider joining the SF chapter of the nonprofit Voters of Tomorrow! They are currently hiring for their executive board, and all high school students are welcome to apply! Find out more by following their Instagram account at @votsanfrancisco.
The Advocacy in Action club has been a valuable asset to SHC during this election season, educating students about their role in political engagement. Don’t forget to join their Schoology page, and come to meetings in Ms. Kuehl’s room (Room 510) to learn how you can use your voice for civic action!
