The Beta Schedule

Ever since I was a freshman I have dreaded green days, but, for the first time in three years, SHC is trying out a new schedule for one month. When I first heard about this new schedule I loved the idea of every class on Monday, then white and blue days for the rest of the week. As the first week of this new schedule came to an end I had realized that you should be careful what you wish for. To a certain extent I missed green days. I couldn’t put my finger on it but something about this new schedule was more stressful and tiring than any usual week at SHC. From what I had heard, a lot of my classmates agreed. Jolena Wong ’16 said, “Having all six classes on a Monday is already really tiring and the classes are way too short to finish anything. We have to worry about all of our homework for all six classes on Sunday which minimizes our study time.” Andres Cruz ’18 said, “It would work better for a full rotation on Friday but besides that I think it’s fine.”

A good point was brought up by one of my teachers, that our schedule should be white, blue, white, blue, continuously for the entire year. No green days, and no full schedule days. The biggest problem I heard, was students having to do all of their homework on Sunday. “…I don’t like it because I don’t like doing all my homework on the weekend. You have to deal with all your classes and it’s time consuming.” Said Lily O’Connell class of 2017. “Ruins weekends. The problem with having six classes is that you have six teachers wanting to give you six quizzes and I actually did have six quizzes. It sucked!” Said Anthony Maximov ’16.

We are now halfway through testing the beta schedule and I am starting to get use to it. Gabby Wong class of 2016 first said, “I just feel like the week has been going on forever. School feels longer. I thought it was going to feel shorter but it doesn’t.” I later followed up with her and she commented, “I have gotten use to it in a short period of time, but I’m still not the biggest fan.” I followed up with Lily O’Connell and she said, “I like it now because there are no more green days, and you get the longest schedule of the day over with on Monday.

Getting use to the schedule doesn’t necessarily mean that we like it, but like most things in high school we live with it. Green days were never fun, but at least, for juniors, we had three years to get use to them. Be Careful what you wish for, because the grass isn’t always GREENer on the other side.
