Listen up all you lovers of theater, drama enthusiasts, and literary fanatics! Mark your calendars because SHCP’s fall play is coming to town. This year’s performance is based on Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, a story set in the early 1930s in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama.
This southern drama focuses on the innocence and naivete of childhood as well as the racial injustices against blacks during a time of segregation, Jim Crow Laws, and the KKK. For those who have not gotten the chance to read the novel, the plot follows a young white girl named Scout and her family as she witnesses a life changing event: the trial of Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. During Scout’s journey of growth and maturity, her outlook on life changes as she experiences, firsthand, the prejudice and indignation the black community suffers. A key character that plays a role in Scout’s development is Boo Radley, the mysterious and estranged persona whose reputation among children as the boogeyman leads to misconceptions.
Rehearsal continue this week in preparation for opening night on November 4th. An exciting number of the cast is freshmen.
“We have many freshman debuting in the play, and are excited to work with them. Scout, Dill, Jem, and Tom are played by freshman–all leading characters!” says Ms. Torris-Kelly, director of the play.
Tickets are available for purchase on the SHCP website.
