To SHC,
I’m Lucia Miyaki, and I’m so excited to be the Editor-in-Chief of your school newspaper for the 2025-26 school year!
My story at the Emerald started in my freshman year, when my English teacher, Ms. Kuehl, helped me sign up to take the Journalism elective as my block 8. I didn’t have any prior experience writing as a reporter rather than a student, but as soon as I stepped into the class that second day of sophomore year, I fell in love. I don’t know what it was; being able to write in a voice personal to me for once, the strong bond the students in our class shared, or all the new friends I made from being forced to put myself out there for interviews. I knew within the first month that I had found the perfect place for me. These were my people: the ones who listen, who question, who create and keep the stories of our school. Journalists.
The journey I took to become EIC wasn’t conventional. It wasn’t expected by any means. But I know I’m stepping into this position because writing is what I love to do, and I want to share that joy with as many of you as possible. Each reporter in this club pours their heart and soul into every piece they write, every photo they take, every video they post. I believe that dedication deserves to be recognized.
That leads me to my ultimate goal for the year: making us known. I don’t want the Emerald to be a shadow on campus. I want it to be somewhere everyone feels they have a seat at the table, or if they aren’t a regular, that they’re welcome to pull up a chair. I want to create an environment defined by community, growth, imagination, and confidence.
I can’t wait to start this new chapter in my journalistic career. The Emerald holds such a special place in my heart, and I hope that under my leadership, it will have that same impact on you. No matter who you are: a staff member, a guest writer, a reader, or someone who just picks up the print to do the crossword, I want the Emerald to be a part of SHC that you remember.
Let’s have a great year, and go Irish!
