Songs of the Season: Mother Earth’s Welcome Into the New School Year!

Warming up with winter, soaring through spring, skipping into summer and finishing with fall, this December the SHC Chorus invites students, faculty, family and friends on a journey through the seasons in their winter concert, “Songs of the Season”.

As usual, our SHC Chorus will present a variety of songs an audience would not expect in an average winter performance. Last year, choral groups awed spectators with their “Christmas Around the World” theme, pulling from countries around the world like Cuba, Nigeria and the Netherlands. Out of the box and off the charts, they will simply stun and amaze this coming December.

Ms. Smith, one of the chorus directors, points out that artsy songs based on poems, like those of Shakespeare and Robert Frost, will be among some of the songs in this fantastic musical arrangement.

The amount of singers in each choir as well as the extensive hours of rehearsal that they commit to, will bolster the quality of these songs, too. The influx of new members to the various choirs will definitely add to the talent and wholesomeness of the music.

“The new student turnout was terrific this year with even more men than last year,” says chorus director, Mr. Bohm.

The amount of preparation depends on the choirs.  For example, regular Concert Choir gathers every blue morning to practice, while Women’s Ensemble practices after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

It is important that rehearsals begin early so that the singers can learn the “intricate harmonies and rhythms in their music. Attention to detail and improvement… is required,” according to Mr. Bohm.

Though audience members will enjoy this seemingly smooth, effortless production, none of it would be possible without rigorous behind-the-scenes action. The tech crew is also hard at work making the chorus’ vision of seasonal euphoria a reality for the stage.

Technical director Mr. Mahoney remarks that amidst the beautiful landscape, “an elevated piano set up” will surely catch the eye of any audience member.

The layout will also be extra stable this year because, as Mr. Bohm warns, the weather may get a little chilly in the theater and there may be a slight chance of mischievous fun in the spectacular finale.

Be sure not to miss this flurry of the seasons on Friday, December 4th at 7:30pm and Sunday, December 6th at 3:30pm and 7:30pm.
