A Walk To Remember

On Saturday, October 20th, 2012, the members of S.P.A.R.K., or Students Promoting Awareness Raises Knowledge, took part in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

Within the weeks before the walk, SPARK held a bake sale, sold pink t-shirts (shown in the picture on the right), and received online donations. From all these donations, the bake sale, and the t-shirts, SPARK raised a total of $615.00 for the American Cancer Society.

Under the leadership of Melissa Bautista ’14, Yoselin Martinez Xonthe ’14, Rosario Macahilas ’14, Nicholas Lee ’14, and Shivangee Devdhara ‘14, SPARK members and other members of the community came out to Golden Gate Park on that early and cold Saturday morning, and walked  5-miles for Breast Cancer.

As a club, SPARK walked for the survivors that were at the walk, the fighters who were fighting for their lives at that moment, and the victims who were there spiritually.

“I was apprehensive at first because I don’t know anyone with breast cancer, but as soon as I walked into Golden Gate Park, I was welcomed into a sea of pink. It was a fun time to walk with friends but also to reflect on why we were walking: to find a cure. I felt really powerful afterwards, like I could make a difference,” commented Enya Maher ‘14.

“The walk was an amazing experience to have with some of the members of SPARK,” reflected Rosario Macahilas ‘14.

Each member commemorated his/her walk to someone he/she was close to who was affected by breast cancer, and collectively, we made a difference in the search for the cure.
