The Movie Frozen

The+Movie+Frozen

Have you heard the song “Let It Go” from the soundtrack of the latest Disney production, Frozen? With the song at the top of the billboard charts, chances are that you have. Co-written and directed by Jennifer Lee, Frozen has warmed the hearts of many in this cold winter season.

The film deviates from the usual Disney formula of a handsome prince, helpless princess and frightening villain. Frozen is essentially about a complicated relationship between two sisters, Elsa and Anna, who live in the kingdom of Arendelle. Elsa distances herself from Anna over the years after discovering she has the power to create ice and snow. Fearing that her uncontrolled power will hurt her loved ones, she seeks isolation. When trade negotiations begin with the neighboring town of Wesselton, Elsa accidentally puts her kingdom into an eternal winter. Believed to be a witch, Elsa is driven out. With the help of an ice-monger Kristoff, his reindeer, and a talking snowman, Anna must rescue her sister, restore summer, and ensure the future of Arendelle. Meanwhile, Prince Hans, Anna’s fiancé, sets about his secret plan to take over the kingdom.

Apart from Prince Hans, there is no real villain.  The film focuses on sisterly love, as opposed to the typical romantic relationships disney princess movies are known for. Frozen constantly challenges viewers’ expectations and escapes the stereotypes of a Disney princess movie. Not only is Prince Charming a jerk, but also the act of love that saves Anna from near death is not between her and the ice-monger to whom she grows close during the quest for her sister. Instead, it was an act of love between sisters that saved the day in the end.

Full of catchy songs and life lessons, Frozen definitely deserves the title of “Best Animated Film” as awarded by the Golden Globes on January 12. It once more proved of its success when it won the 86th Academy Awards, defeating The Croods, Despicable Me 2 and The Wind Rises.
