Hungry for Some Cheesy Buns!

In my family the Thanksgiving Day dinner is always at my house, which usually means helping out with the Thanksgiving feast. Being the geek that he is, my dad decided to have fun with the appetizers this year and looked online for some interesting recipes. What’d he find? Peeta’s Cheese Buns.

For all of you who don’t know, Peeta Mallark is one of the popular characters in Suzanne Collins’ popular series Hunger Games. In the novel, the protagonist Katniss Everdeen describes one of the baked goods of the Mallark Bakery. Known for her descriptive writing style, Collin makes her readers’ mouths water as she beautifully portrays the cheesy buns–from their texture to their taste, right now to the last crumb.

Although extremely geeky, the thought of making a recipe right out of a novel sounded quite exciting and so I agreed to help my dad make the cheese buns. Not only that, but I honestly had never made bread before and so it would prove to be a new and exciting experience. Luckily, the recipe is simple and requires nothing more than patience when the dough rises. Other than that, if you are looking for some tasty appetizers to serve to friends that are both interesting and mouthwatering, I suggest making these!

Because I made this with my older sister who was here for the Thanksgiving holidays, many mistakes were made. Still, it was fun working with someone so I suggest finding a friend or sibling to work with you. Even though our buns turned out to be a bit flatter than expected, I’m sure that was due to us messing around more than anything.

Enjoy!

Peeta’s Cheesey Buns

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tbs sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 3/4 cup shredded gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tbs cup butter, melted

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375º Fahrenheit. Grease a small pan.
  2. Combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt and the yeast in a large mixing bowl, thoroughly mix. Toss in 1/2 cup of each cheese.
  3. Add the warm milk, warm water and the oil. Beat for about 5 minutes. Gradually stir in the rest of the flour until you have a soft dough.
  4. Put dough on a floured board. Knead the dough until it is elastic and not sticky, adding more flour if necessary.
  5. Place in a greased bowl and then flip the dough over to grease the other side. Cover the dough with plastic wrap. Let the dough rise in a warm environment for approximately one half hour. Punch the dough down, cover again and let rest for 10 more minutes.
  6. Cut dough into 20 separate pieces. Shape each into a sphere. Dip each ball in melted butter.
  7. Arrange balls in two layers in the small well greased pan. Cover with a paper towel. Let rise in warm place until balls are almost to top of pan, about one hour.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining cheeses over the rolls. Bake on the lower rack of a preheated 375°F oven for about 35 minutes or until rolls are firm and golden. Let cool for 5 minutes and enjoy!!
