From the Archives: Much Ado About Walking

Welcome to the first installment of “From the Archives”!  Did you know our archives in the Emerald room go back into the early nineties? That’s longer than some of us have been alive! Each week, I will be digging through the Emerald’s musty archives to bring you perspectives of past SHC students. It’s especially interesting for me, as co-editor-in-chief, to look at the fruits of the hard work my predecessors put in and realize how much the paper has changed. Not only have we moved mostly online–it’s especially jarring to see past editors with positions that don’t exist anymore!

Today, we’ll be focusing on the largest school event occurring right now. For the past couple years, we’ve been told that funds from the annual Walkathon go towards the DePaul Campus for the Arts, among other things, so we all know that the theater and renovations have been funded in part by us students. But did you know that the sixth floor library and chapel plus some classrooms on the first floor were also built with Walkathon money? In this article from the September 1995 issue, then-sophomore Michelle Enriquez covers the annual Walkathon.

Much Ado About Walking

As dedicated and determined students of SHC, we know that the new Gateway did not just appear there by itself, but through a will and a way. The will arose from our dynamic student body. The way came from the money gathered by the students throughout the special event known as last year’s Walkathon.

The 1995 Annual Walkathon occurred on September 23 at the Polo Fields in Golden Gate Park. The student body walked a distance of ten kilometers under overcast skies.

“This Walkathon demonstrates a lot of the students’ care about our school. By having a Walkathon as our fundraiser, it makes Sacred Heart Cathedral Prep a unique high school,” said development director Mr. Brett Lowart.

During last year’s Walkathon, development department statistics show that the student body raised approximately $113,000, three thousand more than the goal ($110,000). “I feel that if I contribute my money to the school’s fundraiser, I would like to be able to see how my money was used before I graduate,” said sophomore Ajah Herbert.

Funds, from the summer of 1996 till now, will go toward construction, improvements and expansion of the La Salle academic building. In addition to the new sixth floor planned, improvements call for the addition of about four classrooms on the first floor.

A new library and chapel will then be built on the new sixth floor of the LaSalle Campus, overlooking the city. As usual, not all students were enchanted by development plans. “I think the sixth floor is a good idea, but not a library,” said sophomore Bindhu Varghese. “I feel a big theater will be more appropriate.”

Well, we got our theater a year and a half ago, but can you imagine SHC without our library?

Check back next week for a new “From the Archives” installment!
